Just saying the word Paris elicits images of La Tour Eiffel, the Arc de Triomphe, baguettes, and countless other pictures! Once you've visited Paris, it calls you back for it's a rich mélange of friendly people (wearing amazing scarves!), cosmopolitan vibrancy, quiet neighborhoods, colorful history, wide boulevards, narrow streets, and so much more. France
is a country about twice the size of Colorado and is rather like the shape
of a hexagon, bordered by Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy,
Spain, the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and English Channel. For
administrative purposes, (including councils, elections, and budgets),
France is divided into 22 regions. These are all very unique one to the
other, rather like the 50 United States of America.
The
large regions are divided into 96 departments. This sort of division was
established in 1790 and the idea was that anyone could reach the capital of
a department within a day's journey. When you're driving in France today,
look at the license plates. The last two numbers of the plate indicate the
department in which the person lives. (Oh and by the way, the French drive
on the right side of the road, like we do in the USA!) If you see a postal
code for France, check it out. The first two numbers tell the
department. For example, 13100 is the Bouches du Rhône, the 13
department. Then again 14400 is Calvados since 14 is the Calvados
department...and so it goes.
